I’m Ichigo Katakura, the founder and guide of Ichigo Japan. I’m a Japanese local, and I lead my walks in English.
I studied in Canada, and English became the language I use to share Japan with people from abroad.
Ichigo Japan focuses on Tokyo’s shitamachi — the old downtown neighborhoods. Their stories are rarely told in English, and they are at their best in the quiet evening hours. I want to walk those streets with a few people at a time and share what I know about them.
About the name
Ichigo (一期) comes from ichigo ichie (一期一会), a Japanese phrase meaning that each meeting happens only once and should be treasured. Every small group that walks with us is a meeting like that.
